“I wanted to make a website that was easy to access for teachers that would benefit dyslexic students like me”

Growing Up I had immense struggles with reading, I was incredibly slow, I would get so frustrated that I had to read things at least 4 times before I actually understood what was being said. I slowly started to fall behind my peers and it came to a peak when I was in the third grade. I was excelling in math and science and I could understand things really well when they were said to me but my reading speed was so slow. This is when my teacher at the time suggested to my parents I get tested for dyslexia. Once I was diagnosed everything made so much more sense, but there were little to no accommodations that could be made for me at the time. I was told I could leave the class during state testing and read aloud to myself in the hall, and listen to audio books, but other than that I was stuck with the same issues. It felt so isolating and embarrassing to be the only one who needed to leave or whisper to herself during these already stressful moments, but what else could I do?

“As my schooling went on I had to practice and practice my reading skills Ten times harder than my peers, even to this day I still struggle. But I realized that reading aloud couldn’t be the only way to accommodate for my learning disability. So now that I am in my capstone class of my senior year of undergrad here at San Jose State University, I needed a research topic and this couldn’t be more perfect. As a future educator myself I want a recourse to help my differently abled students, and give them more support than I received. This is when I began looking into backed research on how to help students with dyslexia in early stages of their education. Not to cure them of anything but give them the help they deserve and build up their tool boxes with strategies that will improve their literacy skills long term. This is when I found Music Training.”
